    Ant Financial readying VR payments

    Alibaba affiliate and Alipay parent company Ant Financial is readying a virtual reality (VR) payment experience that will allow shoppers to pay with a nod of the head. “People using virtual reality goggles to browse virtual reality shopping malls will be able to pay for purchases without taking off the goggles,” Reuters reports. “User identity can be verified on VR Pay via account logins on connected devices or via voice print technology.” VR Pay is expected to be ready for commercial launch by the end of the year. Reports that Alibaba was exploring VR mobile payments emerged in August 2016.

    Social messaging service WhatsApp has begun testing a service that enables users to send group invites and join a group chat via links, NFC or QR codes. “The feature is live in version 2.16.281 of the app, which is still in beta,” Android Police reports. Fido was launched in 2013 as an open security authentication concept to replace passwords with a range of methods such as biometrics.     Customers of Japan’s Ogaki Kyoritsu Bank will soon be able to access services by using their palms for authentication. “The bank plans to install its palm scanning equipment at the counters of all its approximately 160 branches from next spring,” The Asahi Shimbun reports. “The expansion will cover almost all over-the-counter services, including purchases and cancellation of investment trust funds.” The bank developed the palm vein biometric identification system in 2012, but it has so far been limited to select ATMs.

    Ant Financial acquires EyeVerify

    Alipay parent company Ant Financial has acquired biometric provider EyeVerify. “Earlier this year, Ant Financial and EyeVerify entered into a licensing agreement in which Eyeprint ID was integrated into Ant Financial’s payment authentication platform,” Ant Financial says. The acquisition will allow the company’s Eyeprint ID technology to be integrated into more Ant Financial products and “secure hundreds of millions of consumers’ online data and transactions”. Eyeprint ID works by capturing an image of an eye and matching the unique vein pattern to verify identity. The acquisition cost $100m, Fortune reports.

    Transport for New South Wales (NSW) has launched the Future Transport Beacon Innovation Challenge, asking for ideas from “tech savvy visionaries” to enable new use cases for a network of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons at Chatswood Station. “The best submissions will earn access to the trial beacon network from 10 October to 13 November,” Transport for NSW says. “If their concept is successful in trial, they will be invited to a live demo day to showcase their concepts to a panel of Transport for NSW leaders.”
