Rogers Wireless aims to be NFC ‘middleman’

Canadian mobile network operator Rogers Wireless has said it aims to become a ‘middleman’ for NFC mobile payments systems, Canoe reports.

David Robinson, Rogers Wireless’ vice president of new business planning, said the firm plans to operate as a middleman acting between the issuing bank and payment processor.

Robinson said mobile contactless payments will be a new revenue stream for Rogers Wireless, but was cautious as to how big that stream would be. The company has said, however, it expects virtually every Canadian with a smartphone to be able to pay with proximity devices at many large retailers by 2015.

“It’s not going to be a huge business for us, but it will be a meaningful business,” Robinson says.
