ING to pilot NFC in Poland

ING Bank Slaski is to conduct a twelve month NFC payments trial in Poland. The two hundred pilot testers, all employees of Bank Slaski or its partners Visa Europe and Oberthur, will use BlackBerry NFC phones or iPhones equipped with an NFC add-on to make mobile payments at merchants equipped with contactless point-of-sale terminals.

Hrvatski to trial NFC in Croatia

Two hundred employees of Hrvatski Telekom (HT) are to take part in Croatia’s first NFC payments pilot, the carrier has announced. “HT sees a large potential in this type of innovative technology and we plan to continue the expansion of NFC technology so that it would soon become commercially available to all users in Croatia”, says HT’s Irena Jolić Šimović. The pilot will last until October 2012.

Circuit offers NFC security boost

A memristor-based circuit that spits out a steady stream of true random numbers could hold the key to enhanced security in NFC transactions, reports IEEE Spectrum. The tiny circuit, invented by engineers at the National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan, offers the prospect of using small low power devices to generate true random numbers — something that is difficult to do using today’s digital circuits, which typically produce numbers that aren’t completely random, the publication explains.

Orange joins patent pool

Mobile network Orange has joined the NFC Patent Licensing Program, a patent pool run by France Brevets and launched in June with Inside Secure. “Our licensees will benefit, in addition to key patents brought by Inside Secure, to many NFC patents brought by Orange,” says Jean-Charles Hourcade, general manager of France Brevets. “We encourage other relevant patent holders to join our program to simplify the industrial deployment of NFC products and services.”
