French supermarket giant Carrefour, the world’s fourth largest retailer, has opened a new hypermarket equipped with 55,000 NFC shelf-edge labels that let consumers interact with products. Shoppers can also make NFC payments at the point of sale with contactless terminals.

Inside the new Villeneuve-la-Garenne hypermarket, located on the western outskirts of Paris, customers can also find interactive booths for other services including a travel agency, a ticket service and Carrefour’s bank and insurance agency that are also equipped with terminals for NFC mobile payments and contactless card payments.

The chain has also developed a mobile app called C-où that lets consumers prepare a shopping list ahead of their visit and then guides them around the store to find their selected products using the geo-tagged NFC shelf edge labels located in front of 55,000 product lines.

The 11,300 square metre store also has digital screens located at the entrance and near the elevators that showcase in-store promotions, and touchscreen terminals shoppers can use to access recipe ideas and print a list of ingredients as well as submit their opinions and suggestions.
