SMELL THE COFFEE: Commuters in London are to be offered free travel and hot beverages

Mastercard customers using Google’s Android Pay will be able to travel for free around London when using the city’s transport network on four Mondays in October. They will also be eligible for a free hot drink at Caffè Nero stores nationwide throughout the month.

“Just touch in and out on London’s transport network using a Mastercard on an Android device and Mastercard will refund the fare — up to £30.50 (US$39.68) per day,” the payment network says. The offer is available on October 3, 10, 17 and 24.

“Plus, Mastercard customers using Android Pay can get a free coffee or any hot drink from Caffè Nero stores nationwide,” the company adds. “They just need to load their Mastercard into Android Pay and use in stores when stopping by for coffee or breakfast during their commute on any of the Mondays.”

“Our fare-free days across London’s transport network have been a big hit with our cardholders but we wanted to go one step further,” says Mark Barnett, president of Mastercard UK and Ireland. “By also offering a free coffee at Caffè Nero, we hope that the Monday morning commute becomes a little more enjoyable in more ways than one.”

Mastercard let Apple Pay users travel for free across London for four Mondays in November 2015. The company ran another Fare Free Monday campaign for Apple Pay users in February this year.

  1. Mobile payments are much more convenient than cards. One can expect promotions such as this to be very successful in winning converts.
