    Chunghwa Telecom goes live with NFC payments in Taiwan

    Subscribers to Chunghwa Telecom with accounts at any of four Taiwanese banks will be able to download a virtual version of their credit card to their SIM card and use it to make NFC payments from 16 October, the carrier has announced.

    KLM uses Bluetooth beacons to help passengers navigate Schiphol Airport

    Passengers travelling with KLM from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport can now use the airline’s app to get a map of the airport that shows the route they need to take to their gate and the time required to get to there.

    Taxi hailing service Uber is running an NFC marketing campaign in more than 100 London pubs, bars and clubs to promote downloads of its app to drinkers looking to book a taxi ride home.

    eBay to spin off PayPal as a separate company in 2015

    eBay Inc is to be split into two separate publicly traded companies in 2015, the company has announced — and Dan Schulman, president of American Express’ enterprise growth group, has been hired as the new president of PayPal as well as CEO-designee post-spin off.

    Dartmouth researchers develop continuous authentication service based on smart wristbands

    Researchers at Dartmouth College’s Trustworthy Health and Wellness (THaW) group have developed a service that uses a bracelet containing an accelerometer, gyroscope and radio to continuously authenticate the user of a computer system.

    Korea’s SK Planet buys US BLE offers platform Shopkick

    Mobile offers platform Shopkick, which is working with a number of high profile US retailers to roll out a network of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons, has been acquired by SK Planet (SKP), operator of Korea’s largest shopper rewards program and part of the same group as carrier SK Telecom.

    Miami Airport provides airlines and retailers with open access to Bluetooth beacons

    Miami International Airport has become the first in the world to use an open approach to deploying Bluetooth beacons across its footprint. The beacons — located at entrances, check-in, gates, baggage claim and valet parking zones — can be used by a wide range of airport service providers including airlines and retailers, rather than being tied to one particular provider.
