    UK shopping centre runs multi-retailer NFC marketing pilot

    A shopping centre in Solihull, UK is piloting a service that lets shoppers access discounts and promotions from multiple retailers by tapping their phone against NFC-enabled posters displayed in the windows of participating stores.

    Brightwire: Apple signs mobile payments deal with China UnionPay

    “Apple is likely to incorporate a near field communication (NFC) payment function in the next generation iPhone and has reached an agreement with China UnionPay on a mobile payment service,” investment newswire Brightwire reports, citing “a source close to the matter”.

    OTP Bank launches mobile payments in Hungary

    Hungary’s OTP Bank has launched a mobile wallet that allows consumers to pay in stores by scanning a QR code placed next to the cash register. The new OTPay service can also be used to make online payments, by entering the shopper’s mobile phone number during checkout.

    Canadian payments and money transfer provider nTrust has begun piloting a new mobile payments service that uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons placed in stores to make wireless purchases.

    DNP to add invisible smart ink to printed media

    Japan-based Dai Nippon Printing has signed a partnership deal with US startup T+ink, developer of an invisible conductive ink technology that can be used to let consumers interact with books, magazines, advertising, tickets, product packaging and other printed media using a smartphone or other mobile device.

    Vodafone adds support for barcode loyalty and membership cards to NFC wallet

    Mobile network operator Vodafone is expanding the functionality of its mobile wallet beyond NFC with a deal to add Austria-based Bluesource's Mobile-Pocket technology to the service, enabling customers to store hundreds of loyalty, membership, transit and promotional cards in their Vodafone wallet by simply scanning them in using the camera on their smartphone.

    Yapital expands mobile payments to advertising media

    Retailer-owned mobile payments provider Yapital is to add “one click” purchases from printed advertising media to its app, enabling shoppers to order and pay for promoted products by scanning QR codes in merchants’ billboard and newspaper ads, flyers and shop window decals.

    Nintendo to launch NFC toys and payments

    A new Nintendo Figurine Platform and a range of NFC toys that makes use of the NFC functionality in the Wii U GamePad is to be unveiled at the E3 games show next month, company president Satoru Iwata has announced. A standalone device that will enable NFC toys to be used with the Nintendo 3DS handheld console will also be introduced and NFC payments for games are to added, initially in Japan, from this summer.

    Duane Reade installs Bluetooth beacons in ten New York stores

    New York-based drugstore chain Duane Reade has upgraded its iPhone app to include support for iBeacons and ten of its 240 New York stores have been equipped with Bluetooth LE beacons in a bid to “foster greater customer engagement.”
