    TOT to launch NFC payments in Thailand

    Thai state-owned telecommunications provider TOT is to launch an NFC mobile payments service in Thailand next year. The new Just Pay service will include a mobile wallet, an mPOS solution and a web-based mobile customer relationship management (CRM) platform.

    Applebee’s to put 100,000 NFC tablets on dining tables

    NFC is to be included in 100,000 tabletop tablets that are to be installed in US casual dining restaurant chain Applebee’s 1,800 locations. The tablets, supplied by software provider E la Carte, will be on every table and multiple bar positions by the end of next year.

    Nokia delivers NFC advent calendars to UK stores

    Nokia and NFC marketing specialist Wooshping have teamed up to put 1,500 NFC-enabled advent calendars in mobile phone stores across the UK. The 'appvent' calendars offer a different app, as well as the traditional chocolate treat, each day in the run up to Christmas.

    Jolla uses NFC to let users customize their smartphone settings

    Finnish phone maker Jolla‘s new smartphone is to ship with a selection of smart rear covers, known as “The Other Half”, that include NFC and are used to automatically change the device’s settings and functions to the user’s preset favourites.

    Chinese banks sign up for China Telecom NFC wallet launch

    Mobile network operator China Telecom is to launch an NFC mobile wallet in China later this year, in cooperation with more than a dozen financial institutions. More than 30m NFC-enabled SIM cards will be distributed in 2014, the carrier says, and customers will be able to choose from over 40 mobile phones that work with the new Tianyi mobile wallet.

    SimplyTapp gets funding for HCE

    SimplyTapp, the US startup which created Host Card Emulation, bypassing the need to use a carrier controlled SIM-based secure element in NFC transactions, has raised a Series A funding round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners.

    Positive reaction sees Hungarian mobile wallet ready for market

    Eight out of ten testers of the Hungarian mobile wallet pilot project have found the service “very useful” prompting the Hungarian Mobile Wallet Association — an alliance between mobile network operators Magyar Telekom, Vodafone and Telenor with MasterCard, OTP Bank and SuperShop — to declare the MobilTarca wallet ready for market.

    Diamond Circle to turn NFC tags into Bitcoin wallets

    An Australian startup is to begin issuing NFC tags that act as Bitcoin wallets, NFC readers that merchants can use to charge customers in Bitcoins, and to provide Bitcoin ATMs that can be used to issue new wallet tags as well as top up and withdraw funds from Bitcoin accounts.

    Federal Reserve reports on barriers to NFC adoption in the US

    The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston has published a summary of a June meeting of its Mobile Payments Industry Workgroup (MPIW) that sets out a number of reasons why NFC has not yet taken off in the US. It also suggests actions the workgroup could take to increase the adoption of contactless mobile payments.

    The Hong Kong Association of Banks (HKAB) has issued Best Practice for NFC Mobile Payment in Hong Kong, a set of common standards and best practices that aims to help establish an interoperable, as well as safe and effective, NFC mobile payment infrastructure.
