    American Airlines pilots BLE beacons in Dallas

    American Airlines is to run a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacon pilot at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), allowing travellers to access a range of wayfinding and location-based services from their mobile device. The project will be “the world’s biggest airport deployment of beacons to date” and is to be rolled out over the summer to beta users “on select routes and airports in North America”.

    Amazon unveils smartphone that lets users shop the world around them

    Amazon has launched Fire, a smartphone that includes 3D “dynamic perspective” technology and a dedicated Firefly button that lets users recognize — and buy from Amazon — physical products, movies and music that they come across as they shop, browse and socialize. Fire supports NFC and will support Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) in the future.

    InMarket reports positive consumer response to Bluetooth beacons

    Shoppers who receive marketing messages via inMarket’s Mobile to Mortar (M2M) iBeacon platform interact more with advertised products, increase their in-store app usage and are more likely to keep an app on their phone, a survey of 25,000 US consumers has found.

    AT&T to introduce its own NFC platform for merchant offers, access control and more

    US telecoms firm AT&T is to use technology from CorFire to power NFC Connect, a new platform that will enable it to offer a wide range of NFC services outside of the Isis mobile commerce venture it co-owns with Verizon and T-Mobile. CorFire technology will also be used to deliver the carrier’s AT&T Commerce Connect mobile marketing platform.

    LevelUp to build BLE into payments terminals

    US mobile payments service LevelUp is to provide its merchants with the ability to push offers to shoppers via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons built into the next version of its POS device. The move follows a pilot with 20 merchants in Boston which saw participating retailers experiencing a 22% lift in the volume of LevelUp transactions made by customers.

    New guide explains how to connect BLE and NFC devices

    The NFC Forum and the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) have updated their “Bluetooth secure simple pairing using NFC” developer guide. The new edition includes information on how NFC can be used to let consumers quickly and easily pair two devices that support Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), such as a smartphone and a smartwatch or other wearable device.

    Spanish banks and carrier launch mobile offers platform that links discounts to bank cards

    Yaap, a joint venture between Spanish banks CaixaBank and Banco Santander and mobile network operator Telefonica, has launched a mobile commerce platform that lets consumers access merchant offers on their mobile device and then redeem them automatically by simply paying for a purchase with a pre-linked debit or credit card.

    Ticketmaster adds animated watermarks to mobile tickets

    Ticketmaster has launched an iPhone app that uses an animated watermark to prove that a mobile ticket is authentic and valid. The app also lets ticket buyers resell tickets they own and transfer tickets to their new owner.
