Inside Secure has announced its NFC chip technology has been chosen to power “a next-generation smartphone from a leading mobile phone manufacturer.” The new phone is scheduled to be introduced by mid-year, “will run on one of the most widely used mobile operating systems under license” and will use Inside’s MicroRead NFC controller chip and Open NFC protocol stack software.

Inside Secure and embedded semiconductor maker Freescale have developed a reference design for an NFC-enabled prepaid utility meter that users can top up with their NFC phone. The meters would allow householders who prepay for their electricity and other utilities to cut out the need to insert coins or make a special trip to top up a prepaid account card or key.

Inside Secure has released a new version of its open source NFC protocol stack. Open NFC 4.3.3 for Google Android 4.0 enables device manufacturers to include support for the latest NFC features included in Ice Cream Sandwich as well as access to multiple secure elements and is available to download free of charge.

Inside Secure and CorFire, the US arm of Korean NFC specialist SK C&C, are working together to make sure that the French chip maker’s NFC controllers, secure elements and Open NFC protocol stack are fully interoperable with CorFire’s CorTSM trusted service management platform. CorFire technology is used by First Data to manage Google Wallet applications.

Inside Secure has been included in the Deloitte Technology Fast 500 EMEA, a ranking of the 500 fastest growing technology companies in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The French company, which is expected to go public in the near future, has grown operating revenue 318% over five years. Mobile banking specialist Monitise also made the list, with 2,408% growth over the same period.

Inside Secure has shipped 10 million MicroRead and SecuRead NFC controller chips so far in 2011, and the company’s capacity for NFC chip shipments now exceeds five million units per month. “Inside’s NFC chip shipments indicate that this market is achieving significant penetration as more and more mobile device and other consumer electronics device makers begin to integrate NFC functionality into their product offerings,” says chief operating officer Charles Walton.

Digital security specialist Inside Secure has appointed Laurent Sanchez as vice president of applications and ecosystems. Sanchez’s role will include evangelising Open NFC, establishing relationships and launching strategic initiatives with partners in the payment and mobile ecosystems.
