    Half of European cards contactless by 2021

    Half of all European cards will be contactless by 2021 and the volume of contactless payments will rise more than six-fold between 2015 and 2021 to almost 25bn — equivalent to 22% of all payments on European cards — RBR reveals. At the end of 2015, there were 346m contactless cards in the region, up 41% from a year before, with the use of contactless card payments increasing three-fold to 3.7bn, equivalent to 5% of all card payments.

    Worldwide card payments on the rise

    The total number of global card purchases increased by 15% in 2015 to 270bn, almost double the 8% rise in card numbers, RBR’s Global Payment Cards Data and Forecasts to 2021 reveals. “The number of card payments worldwide is projected to rise by 55% between 2015 and 2021 to reach 417bn. This compares to growth of 28% in card numbers over the same period,” the firm says. “The research indicates that consumers around the world are increasingly turning to cards to make purchases.”

    Visa took majority of European contactless payments in 2014

    Visa PayWave accounted for 61% of the 1.4bn contactless payments made in Europe in 2014, research from RBR reveals, with MasterCard PayPass accounting for the “vast majority” of the remainder. “Contactless has spread rapidly in Europe and RBR forecasts the payment volume to increase nine-fold between 2014 and 2020,” the firm adds.

    Some 417bn cashless payments were made in 60 countries worldwide in 2014, according to research from RBR. “These are increasing at only a slightly faster rate than the number of ATM cash withdrawals, suggesting that cash is still favoured as a means of payment for a significant proportion of the global population,” RBR says. “Cards are by far the most common and fastest growing cashless means of payment, making up more than half of such transactions worldwide.”

    The volume of contactless payments in Europe is forecast to rise almost nine-fold to 12.2bn in 2020 compared to 2014 and account for 13% of all card payments, according to research released by RBR.
