Google will launch its Android Pay mobile payment service across Australia in the first half of 2016 with support from several of the country’s major financial institutions, including ANZ, Westpac, Bank of Melbourne, Bank of South Australia, Bendigo Bank, Cuscal, ING Direct, Macquarie Bank and St George. The mobile payment service has also enabled in-app payments in the US.

One in four US consumers would consider sharing their DNA with their financial institution if it meant it would make authentication easier and their personal information more secure, research from Telstra reveals. “Two thirds of US consumers think that using biometrics — such as voice, fingerprint, iris and facial recognition — would be more secure and help reduce the risks of fraud,” says the Australian telecoms operator’s Rocky Scopelliti.

Australian telco Telstra has teamed up with Tapit to enable revellers to download a New Year’s Eve app by tapping NFC tags located at 1,100 Telstra phone boxes and on lanyards worn by 1,300 retail staff. Consumers will use the app to connect with family and friends at midnight as well as submit a text message that could end up being projected onto the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
