    Ant Financial acquires EyeVerify

    Alipay parent company Ant Financial has acquired biometric provider EyeVerify. “Earlier this year, Ant Financial and EyeVerify entered into a licensing agreement in which Eyeprint ID was integrated into Ant Financial’s payment authentication platform,” Ant Financial says. The acquisition will allow the company’s Eyeprint ID technology to be integrated into more Ant Financial products and “secure hundreds of millions of consumers’ online data and transactions”. Eyeprint ID works by capturing an image of an eye and matching the unique vein pattern to verify identity. The acquisition cost $100m, Fortune reports.

    MasterCard sees “strong uptake” of Apple Pay

    “We are seeing strong uptake; these technologies will take time to grow but we’re seeing adoption track really well,” MasterCard’s chief emerging payments officer Ed McLaughlin said of Apple Pay during an interview with Fortune. “Android Pay is going to be more interesting because it will be compatible to Google’s latest version of its operating system. It will be interesting to see how quickly that moves.”

    Google ‘shut down’ beacon project

    A Google service called Google Here that would send notifications via Google Maps and beacons in participating stores was shut by CEO Larry Page this year. “The launch included partnerships with retailers including Starbucks,” Fortune reports. “People familiar with the project say it was shut down for two reasons; Google Here was potentially too invasive, and the company wasn’t sure if many retailers would want it.”

    Wells Fargo pilots face and voice authentication

    US bank Wells Fargo is piloting a face and voice authentication system with 100 customers using its mobile app on their iPhones. “A person just needs to let their face and voice do all the work,” Fortune reports, following a first-hand demonstration of the technology. “Wells Fargo estimates that it takes about 23 seconds or so to pass the security test.”

    Square offers free NFC mPOS readers

    Square will give away 250,000 of its NFC mPOS terminals unveiled during Apple’s WWDC this week. “We need to push hard on getting readers to businesses, which is why we are giving 250,000 of the first wireless readers away for free,” Square CEO Jack Dorsey told Fortune, with readers available to buy in Apple stores “come the fall”.
