    Bologna Airport to install Bluetooth beacons, NFC tags and QR codes

    Travellers passing through  Bologna Airport in Italy will soon be able to download the airport’s mobile app by tapping NFC tags or scanning QR codes with their mobile phone. They will then get notifications via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons installed by platform provider Connecthings. “Orientation in the airport can be now greatly, simply facilitated using the mobile devices everybody’s using,” says Bologna Airport’s Silvia Lombardi.

    London station offers audio navigation using BLE

    Blind and partially sighted people are being guided around London’s Euston station via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons and Wayfindr, a venture between UK charity the Royal London Society for Blind People (RLSB) and digital studio ustwo. “The Wayfindr standard will launch in early 2016, setting the first guidelines for audio navigation for vision impaired people,” the company says. It was recently awarded a US$1m grant from the Google Impact Challenge: Disabilities programme.

    Audi Q7 includes NFC tablet

    German car maker Audi’s new Q7 model features an NFC-enabled tablet, allowing passengers to transmit information and entertainment to and from their smartphones which can then be distributed throughout the vehicle. The Audi tablet uses the Android operating system and connects to the car’s MMI information and entertainment system via Wifi, allowing passengers to send a planned route to the driver’s navigation display, for example, or the driver can start a radio or media programme.

    US mall operator tests BLE beacons

    US mall operator Taubman is piloting BLE beacons for an indoor navigation service at its Mall at University Town Center in Sarasota, Florida, with plans to roll out the platform to other properties throughout the year. The platform is powered by Spreo and works in conjunction with a The Mall at UTC mobile app. Taubman owns, manages and leases 21 regional, super-regional and outlet shopping centres in the US and Asia.
