American Express cardholders across Canada can now make NFC mobile payments using Amex Pay, a new feature added to the Amex App. The service is available for customers with eligible consumer, small business and corporate cards with compatible Android devices and the latest version of the mobile app.

American Express“The launch of Amex Pay allows American Express cardmembers in Canada to shop with spend wherever American Express contactless payments are accepted using an eligible Android device,” American Express says.

“To get started, card members can simply activate an eligible American Express card with Amex Pay on an eligible Android device by downloading or updating the Amex App.”

“The launch of Amex Pay is another example of our commitment to innovation and providing our card members with more ways to use their cards,” says American Express Canada’s Suat Alaybeyoglu.

American Express became the first to announce its support for Apple Pay in Canada when the mobile payment service rolled out in the country in November 2015.

Well, I have Apple Pay so I can make contactless payments using my iPhone and my Amex account. What I do not have is a contactless Amex card or, for that matter, any contactless card. All I have are the slow contact EMV with the credit card number in the clear on a magnetic stripe.

It is difficult to understand why US brands and issuers continue to lag so far behind the rest of the world.
