The contactless spending limit in France will increase from €20 (US$21) to €30 (US$32) at the end of this year. From March 2017, contactless payment terminals will be reconfigured to accept payments up to the new limit and, from October, new bank cards will be issued to consumers. According to French bank card association Groupement des Cartes Bancaires, about 40% of consumers will have their new card with the €30 spending limit by the end of 2018.

French bank Societe Generale is to offer retail customers in France the chance to replace their current Visa cards with ones featuring a dynamic security code developed by Oberthur Technologies. The OT Motion Card replaces the three-digit security number on the back of the card with a mini-screen displaying a code refreshed automatically and randomly every hour. The move comes after French bank card association Cartes Bancaires issued certification for OT Motion Code earlier this month.

French bank card association Cartes Bancaires has issued certification for a dynamic security code payment card developed by Oberthur Technologies. The OT Motion Code cards replace the three-figure security code on the back of plastic cards with a mini-screen displaying a code which automatically changes periodically to make online payments more secure. The cards were trialled by BNP Paribas in October 2015, following an initial trial conducted by French bank BPCE.

Oberthur Technologies (OT) is working with retail payment operator STET and Cartes Bancaires CB Group (GIE-CB), the regulatory body for the payment card system, to roll out mobile payment services in France. “Banks have commissioned STET and GIE-CB to work together to develop an industrial platform to enable banks to use this new payment method securely,” OT says. “By using OT’s Digital Enablement Platform (DEP), the customers of French banks will be able to use virtual payment cards stored in the digital wallets provided by manufacturers of compatible mobiles.”

Technical specifications have been finalised, the French government is providing €20m to promote the adoption of NFC services and four mobile network operators and four banks have announced they will deploy NFC services nationally in the spring of 2012.
