An APK teardown conducted by XDA reveals that Google plans to add the ability to make payments directly through its Google Home voice-activated speaker powered by Google Assistant. “The string ‘you’ll soon be able to pay for things’ when you use Google Assistant indicates the service is not yet live… but it soon will be,” the publication reports. “Plus, you’ll be able to specify which Assistant-connected devices will be able to participate in making payments.”

“To address an issue that could have allowed unauthorized use of an existing prepaid card balance if someone recovered a lost phone without a screen lock, tonight we temporarily disabled provisioning of prepaid cards,” says Google Wallet VP Osama Bedier.

The latest Google Wallet hack is the first to impact users of stock Android phones and allows anyone who obtains a lost or stolen device which does not have a screen lock set up to gain access to and spend the owner’s prepaid card balance.

Just a few days after the launch of the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon, Android enthusiasts have found a number of ways to get around the US carrier’s attempt to block Google Wallet from its version of the phone and users are now successfully making NFC payments.

A bug in Android 4’s NFC implementation prevents Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus phone from writing NDEF messages to unformatted tags. First reported on the XDA Developers forums, the problem also affects other devices running Ice Cream Sandwich and is now being addressed by Google: “We’re aware of this issue, and it will be fixed in next upcoming release,” says the company.

Developers say they have come up with a way to add Google Wallet functionality, including a Google Prepaid Card carrying a free US$10 credit, to the original Nexus S NFC phone.
